Literature of the United Kingdom (Y1, Q4)

This study covers the wisdom and poetry literature of the Old Testament, most of which was produced at the height of Israel’s power and prosperity.  We will study selected portions of Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and the Song of Solomon.  For topical reasons we will also give attention to the book of Job, though it likely dates from earlier times.

This study covers the development of Israel from a loose association of tribes to a unified nation with centralized government.  The historical accounts of this period are 1 & 2 Samuel, 1 Kings 1-11, 1 Chronicles, and 2 Chronicles 1-9.  We will study the lives and reigns of Saul, David, and Solomon with emphasis upon the Davidic covenant.

This study covers Joshua, Judges and Ruth with a special emphasis upon God’s promise to Abraham that his descendants would inherit the land of Canaan.  We will study the conquest and settlement of the land by Israel and their failure to fully subdue their enemies because of persistent disobedience.

This study covers Genesis-Deuteronomy with a special emphasis upon God’s covenant with Abraham.  We will trace the development of a nation from Abraham’s descendants, the covenant God made with them, and their preparation to conquer the land which God had promised to them.
